The Americans emphasis on the character of them leaders in their corporations says a lot about how these guys are important and whatever they do really affects where the organization goes. Leaders first should be of impeccable character that will be emulated by those below them and be admirable. Actions such as corruption, unaccountability and so much more are bad apples in the organization and should be eliminated through punishments for white collar criminals. An example is Cornelius Vanderbilt who made fortunes through steamships and railroads for being such great leader to be an icon to the insiders and outsiders of his firm. The choice for a permanent base camp has not been made because the are plenty of good reasons why there should be one. On the other hand there are also plenty of bad reasons why there shouldn’t be one. The Argument The Good Things The good things about this settlement is that everyone can have comfortable hot showers and a heating system to keep them warm. This is also good because there is a possibility that if it is built then it could lower the chances of polluting the area (more than it already is). That is if recycling bins and trash cans are added. The Bad Things Some of the bad things about the project is that it can cause more pollution instead of lowering the chances of it. The building if not stable enough could collapse because the base camp is a moving glacier. Building this would cost more than $700,000 (not including the cost for electricity and supplies). That would make a sum of about $3,000,000 for when it is first built and and about $2,300,000 for all the supplies and electricity. That probably does not even include the cost of shipping. which would add about $50,000 every time a load of stuff is shipped there. The Problem The problem is that Mount Everest is a moving glacier with an altitude of 17598ft. Also this permanent camp could cause even more pollution than there already is. This is also very costly considering that it is very far from any major towns and it takes several days of trekking to get there, so building a settlement will be difficult and expensive. Also the altitude makes living there very difficult, the people who work in the camp would have to go back to a lower altitude every week or so. Along with that operating and sustaining the camp would be extremely expensive, supplies would take very long to be delivered. Wintersons story take the opposite route for its bed torn demise. In the world created by Winterson, people are deprived of sleep and beds themselves are slowly becoming obsolete and illegal. The story is told from the viewpoint of the main character -who remains unnamed. I will continue to refer to the character as a male, but in retrospect have realised there is no direct mention of a gender- Winterson also happens to be a lesbian so the references to the characters girlfriends are quite possibly a reflection of her personal lifestyle, though it remains open ended for interpretation. It is about his life as one of the few remaining sleepers and the difficulties involved with his struggle to stick to his instinctual love for sleep when faced with a world that think of sleep as dirty, unhygienic, wasteful, and disrespectful to others ( quote taken from Disappearance). The plot closes softly toward the end with the character searching for the women he had slept with that night before awakening to find his bed, and her having been in it, gone. The intent of both writers is to show the reader that human nature cannot be compromised. The stories create blatant statements so as to clearly inform the reader who the good guys and the bad guys are by the way things are described. This is well illustrated by passages which romanticize either sex or sleep. Often figurative language is used and it is much more poetic than when the author is describing an aspect or action of the opressor. The following excerpts from Disappearance delicately convey the beauty of sleep and dreaming which the author wished to extend to the reader:Under the night rug, the star rug, moon as lantern, man in the moon watching over us, dog star at heels, we lay. People have come together and endured hardships, and though the alledged suffering in both stories is not as striking or harsh and apparent, it is something which we can relate to oppression in our own history. In Disappearance, the main character presents himself as what might be called one of the sole survivors of the workaholic day and age, however there are other sleepers featured in the story. This can be parallelled with the nothinghead culture in Welcome To The Monkey House . They both show the prevalence of an underground movement trying madly to recapture and awaken others into realising what has been missing from their lives. Though Nancy, in Welcome to The Monkey House appears to have a dislike for the subversive nothinghead movement , it is revealed in the end that she may have come full circle to appreciate what has been done for her benefit ( her deflowering). So you see, both authors have tried their best to shade the oppressors in each story for their true nature; hinderances to natural human functions. There is a need to name the oppressive force in both stories the government and society as a whole. The gruff hand of the government is a reality many people have come to realise throughout history and even today people are being forced to live through bad circumstances created by the very system which is supposed to be working to benefit them. Therefore, it is not hard to grasp the situations in which both main characters are made to live. Each story tells of the rigid and linear rules the citizens are made to live in and clearly demonstrate the strict decorum of the two worlds. In Disappearance, all public areas are designated non- sleeping and all beds at home are required by law to have a personal alarm clock built into the mattress. Getting caught on a mattress with a broken alarm entails a fine and after 3 fines one is disqualified from sleeping for a year. In Welcome To the Monkey House , refusal to take ethical birth control pills resulted in a fine of $10,000 and ten years in jail. Naturally occuring human needs cannot be changed. Meaning there are a few basic things we all need to live as healthy human beings. Sleep being one of them. While sex cannot be considered truly essential, it can be compared to the likes of parental care. Carol Ann Duffy Childhood and Youth Essays Carol Ann Duffy Childhood and Youth Essay Carol Ann Duffy Childhood and Youth Essay Essay Topic: Carol ann Duffy Poems Literature Carol Ann Duffy has portrayed her views on childhood and youth in various ways in the three poems, Mrs Tilschers Class, Education for Leisure and Comprehensive Duffy has written about her own personal experiences but has inverted the poems to address the audience as many readers from the same decade would have experienced the same scenarios as Duffy depicts in her poems, this is particularly true in the poem Mrs Tilschers Class. In Mrs Tilschers Class Duffy presents childhood an innocent stage of a persons life where they are engrossed in this metaphorical perfect world within the classroom, away from the dangerous outside world. The child is on a journey to knowledge in the last year of primary school and becomes more experienced, and developed through this discovery. The theme of wanting something from life is carried on with Education for Leisure where a young person, most likely a teenager is desperate to be recognised, I have had enough of being ignored. The teenager wants to be noticed and have an impact at school, as presently he is going through the education system with no feeling or desire to achieve anything. In this poem childhood is presented as an isolation from the rest of society, the teenagers are driven to almost kill or carry out violence to be noticed, which tells us that this stage of their lives where difficult as they feel they have no purpose or meaning. In Education for Leisure it is clear that the teenagers education is not doing him any good, as he has not been able to find work as he is on the dole, and not working, nor has it helped him to control his boredom or frustration. I squash a fly against the window with my thumb. This is reflected in Mrs Tilschers Class where the primary school children are bored of the primary school, and are curious to know more about the world, e. g how they were born. This shows that the school system in the 20th century did not satisfy the needs of children and have led them into the world without the experience and knowledge they needed. In the poem Comprehensive Duffy presents the division between the white children and the immigrant c hildren. There is a significant difference between the attitude of the two different groups, which shows the immigrants wanting to be able to learn and do something with their lives, yet the British children are more resentful and have fewer goals and ambitions. The poem shows a sense of diversity in the school but no community spirit or emphasis on learning in place; this may be the cause of uneducated children such as the teenager in Education for Leisure who feel they are being failed by schools. The poem In Mrs Tilschers Class is autobiographical and explains Duffys own personal experiences during her time at primary school. The theme of the poem shows the development from innocence at primary school to understanding and knowledge in the wider world. This transition is also shown in the physical form of a young child to adolescence. Duffy portrays primary school as a safe haven and when the child becomes more aware of their surroundings they begin to take that metaphorical journey to knowledge however the teacher, or in the case of Carol Ann Duffy Mrs Tilscher does not help them to take that step, they must move on by themselves. Leaving primary school for the last time is like an escape that children are eager to make but which takes them from the safety of the classroom into a dangerous unknown world you ran through the gates, as the sky spilt up into a thunderstorm. A thunderstorm could metaphorically represent the threat this would poses on these innocent children who are inexperienced and not prepared for real life. As the poem progresses the child becomes more inquisitive and starts to grow up, this is reflected by the humid weather, that feverish July and the ill feeling a person feels in the hot weather, untidy hot, fractious under the heavy sexy sky is associated with the physical changes as a child goes through the stage of becoming an adolescence. This poem is similar to Comprehensive as it is set in another school, this time in a secondary school and Duffy represents the feelings of children from different cultures in separate monologues. In Comprehensive Duffy describes the segregation between different ethnic minorities within a non-selective comprehensive school. The reality of a Comprehensive school is highlighted in this poem and there is a contrast between the views of English students and those from different backgrounds. The white children are ones with less ambition in life, but have bitter resentment against the immigrant children, Whereas the other children want to seek the opportunity and wasnt to succeed and have a positive outlook, I have hope and am ambitious. Yet the reality when they arrive is very different and they realise life is not any better in the UK, than back home. Education for Leisure is a dramatic monologue and shows one youths feelings towards life. The poem describes the thoughts and feelings of this disturbed youth who feels undervalued and convinces himself that it is necessary to carry out violence so he will be noticed. The poem shows two sides to this youth, one that he is a creative genius, but the other that he believes no-one appreciates his feelings and talent. They dont appreciate my autograph. So to try and erase this lack of distinction he decides that it would be clever to kill. He connects changing somethings world with his genius, implying that he is going to kill. In terms of language features in Mrs Tilschers Class poem, Duffy uses the second person pronoun you to address the reader. The poem is about her own experience in Mrs Tilschers Class but writing in the second person she is targeting the audience an d calls upon us to share her experience. This same pronoun is again utilised in the poem Education for Leisure, in the final line where the teenager reaches out to touch our arm. Duffy has created an atmosphere of fear as it the first time in the poem that the child has contact of with a human, and as a reader Duffy is trying to show that the child has potential to harm us. The use of pronouns is essential to this poem and there is a noticeable reputation of the phrase Im going to is effective in the way that it shows the determination of the youth, and his desire to make a difference. In Comprehensive Duffy uses an interesting range of pronouns, for example when each speaker is talking about their experience they refer to the children from other backgrounds as them or they rather than their names, theyre different from us, showing they are lacking importance and are just branded as another class people also the reader does not know who they or them is so will interpret it as they wish. Many metaphors are used in the poem In Mrs Tilschers Class, particularly in the last stanza where there is an essence of time moving on and the child growing up quickly. At the beginning of the last stanza when Duffy refers to feverish July it is the child who is feverish and anxious to find out more about the world, especially how you were born. Then the reports are handed out, almost as if these are the end to primary school, an end to childhood for Carol Duffy and then the thunderstorm breaks, which is a metaphor for freedom. As the sky spilt open into a thunderstorm The newly created adolescence is now able to explore the world, with a changed attitude and perspective on life. In the beginning of the poem Duffy creates a strong image of a primary school classroom with the children tracing the route with their fingers on a map, You could travel up the blue Nile with your finger tracing the route then after an hour comes a bottle of milk which was a popular tradition in the 1960s. The window pole and the handbell are also familiar objects. The simile, The laugh of a bell swung by a running child echoes the vigorous ringing of the bell after lessons had ended. Another simile used is the classroom glowed like a sweet shop which signifies that the classroom is really where the child wants to be, as it is full of bright attractive colours and has the same qualities as a popular sweetshop. The language Duffy uses in both Comprehensive, In Mrs Tilscher class as well as Education for Leisure is basic English, to represent a childs perspective for example I see that it is good. Both poems also use natural speech in the first person, to show the direct experiences of real- life children. The language spoken in Comprehensive varies with each of the seven accounts, because each of the students is from another multi-cultural background they have a different way of speaking, for example the African girl talks very monosyllabic and simple English, similar to the Ejaz the Asian boy, suggesting that English is their second language. Wayne, who is British, speaks is again speaking in very simplistic yet with a colloquial dialect. His single word sentences show a lack of effort to communicate and his pessimistic attitude. Wayne. Fourteen. Gamers are for Kids. Finally the last Asian girl proves to speak the most fluent and well structured English with the use of vocabulary such as ambitious, this implies she is from a well educated background. So overall all the language used in the poem is different dependant on the origin of the speaker. In Education for Leisure there is a constant reference to identity, with many of the sentences beginning with the pronoun I. I am a genius and I am going to change the world. The short sentence structure gives a sense of simple declarations of what the teenager intends to carry out and gives an abrupt tone to the poem. Duffy shows the speakers lack of interest at school through Shakespeare, he thinks that Shakespeare is a foreign language and also now the fly which he kills is also in another language, or a language that he does not understand. Yet the speaker contrasts this confusion with his obnoxious attitude that he is a genius. Duffy foregrounds the world I to the front of the sentence to show the speakers motives. The speaker also uses many ordinary every day objects in a menacing way such as a bread-knife and goldfish, the emotive language is portrayed in his intention of killing in the last two sentences. In Mrs Tilschers Class is structured with two stanzas of eight lines and two stanzas of even lines. The poem has no rhyming pattern or rhythm. But is set in two very definite halves, the security of childhood in the classroom defines the first half and the great outdoors with tadpoles and the playground shows the movement to knowledge and discovering more beyond the safety of the classroom. Similar to Mrs Tilschers Class, the poem Comprehensive has not set rhythm or rhythm; it is structured in seven stanzas of different length to show a conversational structure. The poem Education for Leisure is in five stanzas, each of four lines. They do not rhyme with any specific beat or rhythm. The lines are mostly end stopped, and every stanza finishes with a full stop, which is effective as it signals a dramatic stop to each stanza, which makes the reader think about his actions. In Conclusion all three poems are different, because Mrs Tilschers Class shows the innocence of childhood but Comprehensive shows the outcome of when these primary school children develop into teenagers, and the harsh reality of a Secondary School. The message that Duffy is trying to portray is that despite the stereotypical image of teenagers who dont care about their future or have no sense of ambition there are still children from across the globe who want to succeed in their life and desperately want the opportunity to do well. This shows the segregation between the whites and those from other backgrounds. Yet in Primary School, the atmosphere is different and all children are inexperienced and are yet not aware of the wider world, therefore all children desire to seek knowledge and there is a huge divide between the willingness to learn from when a child is a young age compared to when they reach adolescence. Education for Leisure demonstrates the unhappiness of many teenagers, who feel they are not recognised, and noticed enough, driving them to violence through sheer boredom and frustration. In Comprehensive, Duffy does not show any sense of what school is about or the learning aspect of school; instead the attention is focused on the collection of diverse teenagers with their own problems. These problems affect life inside the classroom as well as outside the classroom and the less education a child receives the more troubled they will become in later life as demonstrated in Education for Leisure Overall we can learn that 20th century youth were a mixture of different backgrounds with many different outlooks on life. Compared to present day where many teenagers of different backgrounds mix freely the 20th century seemed to have a division between these various cultures, and Duffy offered a negative view of White British children by portraying them as racist, which indicates there was more violence and tension between the immigrant and the British children. Childhood and Youth can be a pleasant time for those who have the desire to do well and share the same eagerness as they do in primary school, but can also be a lonely time for those who have a powerful sense of their own importance and insignificance of others, and a greater sense of grievance that no one else notices them and they are undervalued.

This is very much less than the result of previous EU expansions to the North and South. It is not only their low income levels that may bring deleterious effects to EU but also the fact that these countries are in the middle of a transition phase from a centrally planned to a market economy. In addition, the new members will have to cope with more EU regulations than before because of the recent creation of the Single European Market concept. Although many of the former communist bloc countries are convinced of the superiority of the free market, some have retained their faith in the socialist system and in the role of government in steering economic growth. Thus, many of them continue to bring up the rear on the list of world's freest economies. In the 2003 Economic Freedom of the World Report, only Estonia made it to the16th rung. Hungary was 35th, Czech 39th and Latvia 51st. At the bottom of the list were Bulgaria at 103rd place, Russia 112th, Romania 116th and Ukraine 117th. (Tupy, L., 2003) Initially, liberalization of these economies pushed output down, but they gradually recovered. By 2002, their separate GDPs grew as foreign investment started to come in. During that year, the World Bank reported that Poland, Hungary, the Czech Republic and Sloavakia led the pack with an average 2.3 per cent growth. Conrads Heart of Darkness and Goldings Lord of the Flies Essay In doing this I will explore some of the key points in both novels. For example they both criticise the period of time they are living in. For Golding it is after the Second World War and he is addressing that war could break out again. Proving this is in the first chapter we hear we was attacked! This shows that mankind would attack children in a passenger plane. Whereas Conrad is living in the late Victorian era where Europe has thrust imperialism on Africa and has exploited the natives into slavery. Evidence of this is the chain-gangs. Firstly I am going to look at how both of the novels in some show a sort of journey into the human mind. In Lord of the Flies it is where the children cross from the good side of the island to the bad side. This starts with Jack saying Bollocks to the rules! This instantly showed the breakdown in society. This started possibly not the journey of the children from good to bad, but it is a journey that the island takes from good to bad. It starts with Jack saying that his choir shall be hunters. This begins the journey. The island starts to get darker and the children start to show the darkness of the human heart. With hunters that can have qualities linked with it that turns people into mere animals with only one thing on the mindkilling. This is showed by how when Jack, Simon and Ralph find the candle buds, Jack acts aggressive with them Jack slashed one of them open with his knife and its scent spilled over them. He didnt just cut them open; he slashed them. He again has killing on his mind with we cant eat them. It is not only Jack that has taken this journey into evil. Jacks tribe are heard to be chanting incessantly Kill the beast! Cut his throat! Spill his blood! So Goldings depiction of a journey into the human mind addresses the obsession of killing. Conrad has a similar approach, but instead of killing he uses madness. Evidence that this is a common thing in the Congo is when Marlow pays a visit to the Doctor. The Doctor was then with a certain eagerness asked me whether he could measure my head Marlow let him, and asked the Doctor whether he measured the peoples heads when they come back too? Now the Doctor says something somewhat strange Oh, I never see themthe changes take place inside you know So the Doctor implies that people go mad out there and never come back. The characters in the two novels sort of follow the same lines. I have grouped the main four characters from the two novels and have put them in to two pairs- Marlow and Ralph and Jack and Mr Kurtz. Firstly, with Marlow and Ralph they start off as good people but they both make mistakes. For Ralph it was ultimately letting the group vote on whether there were ghosts or not. He did not need to let the vote go. What was strange was the way in that he asked the question Who thinks that there may be ghosts? That question seems to lead everyone into saying that there are ghosts. He instantly lost power. He should have asked, Who thinks that there are no ghosts? This would have led everyone into voting for this. Marlow made the main mistake in being led into Kurtzs charisma. He had stated his dislike of the ivory being kept, but when he met Kurtz you hear him say, I was fascinated Jack and Kurtz were similar in that they were evil. I have already examined the way in that Jack is evil, as he instigated the break down in the society on the island. He also had a band of bloodthirsty hunters. Kurtz is evil in the way that he brought in more ivory than all the other stations put together but he never returned it. Looking at the viewpoint of the two novels I find that are in two different ways to address the nature of the novels. Heart of Darkness has Marlows viewpoint. I believe that this was done so that we could be in line with his thoughts and feelings. This makes us understand more about the darkness of the human heart. Whereas Lord of the Flies has a narrator. We dont get the same inside intelligence as with Marlow, but we get some viewpoints such as Ralph wept for the end of innocence Having a narrator helps us to have focused on Ralph on a curve of learning. Simon is viewed differently as his mind is open to us. For example when he encounters the Lord of the Flies, the words that the Lord of the Flies are saying is merely Simon speaking to himself. Golding is writing about Simon in this way so that he can express who the beast actually is. Fancy thinking the Beast was something you could hunt you knew didnt you? Im part of you? We instantly now start to understand that something as bad as the Beast has been made up by the human heart. The setting that Conrad uses is firstly the Thames and then he compares it with Congo. He uses the fact that the Thames leads into the biggest, and the greatest, town on earth. Then the journey down the Congo is a road to evil and darkness. The things Marlow see such as the chain gangs. Black shapes crouched, layattitudes of pain, abandonment, and despair They were dying very slowly-it was very clear In Lord of the Flies Ralph is Adam in Garden of Eden as he has an instinctual relationship with his surroundings, but his goodness gradually fades as he is tempted by evil. The apple in the Garden of Eden is the bad side of the island (the fort area). This is proved by the fact that that was where Piggy was killed his head opened and stuff came out and turned red. Both novels address the darkness of the human heart. I believe that they are both very similar. Conrad and Golding both use death as their tool of evil. In Heart of Darkness it is the natives of Africa that are exploited and flogged until they die. In Lord of the Flies Golding has used the fact that even children would murder each other if they were in charge of society. Both of the texts are fables. The two authors criticise what is happening or what could happen in their period of time. Conrad didnt like what was happening in Africa in the late nineteenth century. Golding was writing what could happen if another war broke out. They may both go to the extremes to condemn society, but with the violence of the everyday world and the overall greed, anything can happen.

Approximately 490,000 babies are born every day worldwide. About 11,000 babies are born each day in the United States alone, which means that at least eight babies are born every minute. Whether a pregnancy is planned for or not, the size, physical characteristics, and intellectual capabilities of a baby are predetermined by the chromosomes that combine in the mother during fertilization. The possibility and probability of a baby having any number of genetic diseases is also determined by genes and the embryo that is fertilized. In 1967, however, a study done by British scientists Robert Edwards and David Gardner paved the way for a life-altering scientific program now known as preimplantation genetic diagnosis, or PGD (Jha, 1). Edwards originally became interested in and began researching about couples with infertility problems while attending the Karolinska Institute in Stockholm, in the 1950’s. Previously, studies had proven that it was possible for egg cells from rabbits to be fertilized outside of the body. It was shown that if sperm was mixed with the egg cells in an appropriate environment, then the embryos could develop successfully without the need for another living system. With this knowledge, Edwards took it upon himself to continue the research at the National Institute for Medical Research in London, where he eventually discovered that it was also possible for human eggs to be fertilized outside of the womb. Araby Interpretive James Joyce

Araby Araby is a short story about a young boy that falls in love that has little or no experiences on the subject he in turn gets to feel for himself some of the follies that come along with it. Firstly we see the awkwardness the boy demonstrates around his crush. This boy who remains nameless throughout the story we see follow around a girl and spy on her, this in my books isn’t a great way to get the ladies, but on the other hand he is just a boy and the story took place over one hundred years ago so I’m thinking this might have been ok back then so I guess I’ll give him a break.Next they finally meet late at night in a dark room by chance and the young boy is speechless can’t even remember what he says at first when the girl asks if he’s going to Araby, but he does vow on bringing something back for her. I’d say that’s reasonable, something I have done for a girl I liked, I have also been painfully nervous around a crush so I can r elate. Now he’s on a mission putting all the parts in play, he gets permission to attend Araby, then the promise of funding from his uncle to complete the task at hand to win his loves heart.He’s ready to go got everything in order but something doesn’t go right and his uncle comes home awfully late, but the boy pushes to go no matter what he’s made up his mind and he’s going something all of us can relate to at one point or another. Finally getting off the train alone he arrives at Araby, he makes is way to the market only to find most of the booths closed he approaches one but sees only English tea sets and pottery, shortly after that the lights go out and he stands there in the dark feeling angry and disappointed.I think he was just wasn’t mature enough to deal with the situation he was out of his element at Araby, he should be in church, school or playing, he’s too young to be concerned about this kind of stuff, but at least now h e’s learned a lesson that love its tough and things don’t always go the way you plan, we have all been there and it sucks and even though what happened to this boy is tiny on the grand scale of relationships it can still hurt.

Assess the View That Sects Always Compromise and Turn Into Denominations

Sects are usually very hostile groups and 9 times out of 10 they will be ‘world rejecting’, meaning that they reject the outside world and believe it is either corrupt or beyond redemption. Such groups tend to abandon the outside world and start their own community with their own way of life or attempt to transform the world with an evangelical approach. An example of a sect which has cut off from the world is the Unification Church, often known as ‘The moonies’ – they reject materialism and encourage its members to hand over all assets whilst imposing an ascetic lifestyle on them.Sects and Cults are known for being quite short lived, and it is suggested that over time they will either turn into a denomination or disband and disappear all together. An example of this is the Methodists, they originally began as a world rejecting religious sect, with members living a lifestyle in opposition to existing society. However, they have evolved over time into becoming the world accommodating denomination that they are today.Neibuhr puts forward his explanation of this and calls it ‘denomination or death. ’ He believes that a Sect is a world rejecting organization that comes into existence because of a schism from an established church due to disagreements within either teachings or religious doctrine. He argues that sects are usually short lived because within one generation they will either compromise with the world, abandon their extreme beliefs and become a denomination or ultimately die out.One reason that Neibuhr puts forward is ‘the second generation’ – this refers to the children of the members who joined voluntarily, they lack the same enthusiasm and beliefs that their parents showed because they were born into it and will not express the same extreme beliefs. He also suggests, ‘the protestant ethic effect’ this is the result of the members living an ascetic lifestyle. People are most likely to join a sect because they are looking for a theodicy of disprivelage to legitimate their position in society, and after living this lifestyle where by they save their money and do not spend it on material goods.They will no longer need the theodicy of disprivelage and will be tempted to compromise with the world and become world accommodating. The Final suggestion, also stated in item A is that most sects have a charismatic leader, and when this leader dies they will either collapse or a new more bureaucratic leadership will take over, this will then transform them into a denomination. However, on the other hand Aldridge suggests that many sects have existed a long time while still retaining their features as sects such as Jehovah’s witnesses.In addition, sects maintain a strict conduct, so much so that if members fail to conform to these standards then they will be expelled, he also points out that sects are very good at socializing children into the acceptance of their beliefs and practices. Innovative Ways to Teach Math Believe it or not, math can be taught in some very innovative ways, and private schools are some of the top educational institutions pioneering new ways to master a traditional subject. A case study in this unique approach to teaching math can be found at one of the top boarding schools in the US, the Phillips Exeter Academy. Years ago, teachers at Exeter developed a series of math books containing problems, techniques, and strategies that are now being used at other private day and boarding schools. This technique has become known as Exeter Math.   The Process of Exeter Math What makes Exeter Math truly innovative, is that the traditional classes and course progression of Algebra 1, Algebra 2, Geometry, etc., is done away with in favor of students learning the skills and computations necessary to solve problems. Every homework assignment contains elements of each traditional math course, rather than separating them out into segmented annual learning.  The math courses at Exeter are centered on the math problems  written by the teachers. The entire course is different from traditional math classes in that it is problem-centered rather than topic-centered. For many, the traditional middle or high school math class generally presents a topic within the class time with the teacher and then asks students to complete lengthy assignments at home that consist of repetitive problem-solving exercises, intended to help students better master the procedures for homework. However, the process is altered in Exeters math classes, which involve little direct instruction drills. Instead, students are given a small number of word problems to complete each night independently. There is little direct instruction about how to complete the problems, but there is a glossary to help students, and the problems tend to build on each other. The students direct the learning process themselves. Each night, students work on the problems, doing the best they can, and log their work. In these problems, the learning  process  is just as important as the answer, and teachers want to see all of the students’ work, even if it is done on their calculators. What If a Student Struggles With Math? Teachers suggest that if students are stuck on a problem, they make an educated guess and then check their work. They do this by making up an easier problem with the same principle as the given problem. Since Exeter is a boarding school, students can visit their teachers, other students, or the math help center if they are stuck while doing their homework in their dorms at night. They are expected to carry out 50 minutes of concentrated work per night and to work persistently, even if the work is very difficult for them. The next day, students bring their work to class where they discuss it in a seminar-like style around a Harkness table, an oval-shaped table that was designed at Exeter and is used in most of their classes to facilitate conversation. The idea is not to just present the right answer but for each student to have a turn presenting his or her work to facilitate conversation, share methods, work out problems, communicate about ideas, and support other students. What Is the Purpose of the Exeter Method? While traditional math courses emphasize rote learning that does not connect to everyday issues, the purpose of the Exeter word problems is to help students really understand math by working out the equations and algorithms themselves rather than just being given them. They also come to understand the applications of the problems. While this process can be very difficult, particularly for students new to the program, students learn traditional math areas such as algebra, geometry, and others by working out the ideas themselves. As a result, they really understand them and how they relate to mathematical issues and problems they could encounter outside of the classroom. Many private schools across the country are adopting the Exeter math class materials and procedures, particularly for honors math class. Teachers at schools using Exeter math state that the program helps students own their work and take responsibility for learning it- rather than simply having it handed to them. Perhaps the most important aspect of Exeter math is that it teaches students that being stuck on a problem is acceptable. The case study reveals the fact that the individual had been recently diagnosed with schizophrenia, which was previously believed to be the signs of autism and hence the treatment was mainly based on behavioral treatment depending upon the situation. On this context it can be said that when a health care provider portrays a gloomy picture of people having mental illness, the clients also perceives themselves negatively. According to the researchers 24 % of the people suffering from schezophrenia have scored less in self regard on the basis of Rosenberg self esteem scale (RSES) (Zargham-Boroujeni et al., 2015). In this case a positive psychotherapy can be used which will be able to focus more on the internal strengths and less on weakness, shortcomings and failures. This can help to set up a positive mindset in the patient in the scenario that will help to find own strength, improve the resilience and achieve a positive worldview. Strength based therapy can include talk therapy which can guide the patient in retelling the history of the stressors, trauma and emphasize on pain having more emphasis on the strength and survival than that of weakness (Xie, 2013). Strength based therapies such as cognitive behavioral therapy, personal therapy, compliance therapy, acceptance and commitment therapy; supportive psychotherapy can be used to treat the behavioral symptoms related to Schizophrenia (Xie, 2013). Cognitive behavioral therapy has shown significant improvements in depression, negative symptoms and social functioning. CBT is again not suited for the patients who are cute sufferers. Personal therapy can be suitable to individuals who have been discharged from clinical settings. Supportive therapy can be used to counsel the patient while dealing with life issues by dealing their problems with general assistance, clarifications and reassurance (Chien et al., 2013). A paradigm shift from deficit based to strength based will help to increase the level of functioning in the patient. The quality of life will improve and the symptoms will decrease. It will bring about a change in the self image of the client (Zargham-Boroujeni et al., 2015). Highe r level of resiliency would cater to the mental well being of the patient. The primary principles of strength based approach is to utilize the strength already possessed by the patient, secondly the client has to be motivated to focus on the strengths (Rashid, 2015). Finally, the environment from where the client will derive resources to strengthen his or skills should be conducing enough.   The family and the communities can help to identify the informal support system that can be provided to such patients. Meetings, social intervention gatherings and educational sessions can help the patient to share his stories with one other as well as the practitioners (Chien et al., 2013). It is essential to develop the therapeutic relationship between the consumer and the practitioner. According to researchers hardiness can be correlated negatively to mental disorders. They have also indicated the relation between the hope of recovery, strength, productive and a satisfying life style (Zargh am-Boroujeni et al., 2015).
